Earth Day 2025: How Marshfield Farm Ice Cream Farms Regeneratively
April 22, 2025

Happy Earth Day from all of us at Marshfield Farm! Today, we’re celebrating by taking a moment to appreciate the incredible ground beneath our feet. For us, it all starts with taking care of the Earth – from healthy soil to happy cows, and, of course, the delicious real dairy ice cream you know and love.
For over 20 years, we’ve been Soil Association Certified Organic, but as farming evolves, so do we. Led by Rory, we’re diving into the exciting world of Regenerative Farming – a way of farming that focuses on improving soil health, which is good news for the environment and great for our cows too.
Did you know that a mere teaspoon of healthy soil contains more microorganisms than there are people on earth? By embracing these forward-thinking methods, we work hand in hand with the land.
Here at Marshfield Farm, we’re all about keeping things homegrown. In fact, 90% of what our cows eat is grown right here on the farm, so they get fresh, nutritious feed all year round. By growing our own crops, we can make sure our cows always have the best, no matter the season. Even in the colder months, when they’re cosy inside, they’re still enjoying regeneratively grown feed straight from our fields.
Regenerative Farming
Sure, we’re known for our ice cream, but at our core, we’re farmers through and through, with generations of experience behind us. As farming evolves, we’ve embraced new methods that not only keep our cows happy but also care for the planet we call home.
So, what’s Regenerative Farming?
Also called “Regen,” it’s all about taking care of the soil. Think of it as working with the land, not against it. It’s a group of farming practices designed to improve soil health, reduce environmental impact, and create a more sustainable future.
With Rory Hawking, our third-generation farmer, leading the way, we’ve started using Regen techniques and some clever new tech. The results? Pretty amazing:
- Healthier Soil: Better soil means more plants and wildlife can thrive.
- Using Less Land: We can grow the same amount of food on less land.
- Lower Carbon Emissions: Carbon stays locked in the soil where it belongs.
- Happy Cows: Nutrient-packed pastures keep our cows content and grazing on the best grass.
- Better Ice Cream! Happier, healthier cows mean milk with higher butterfat, which is the secret to our creamy, delicious ice cream.
This Earth Day, we’re taking a moment to appreciate the land that supports us and reflect on how we can keep giving back. At Marshfield Farm, we’re all about working with the Earth, taking care of our animals, and (of course) making the tastiest ice cream around.
